Five years after opens in a new windowHurricane Ida devastated Manville, survivors, community leaders and local officials gathered to reflect on the borough’s long recovery journey and the challenges that remain. Residents shared concerns about the rising costs of elevating flood-prone homes, limited options for rebuilding after future storms and frustrations with assistance and buyout programs. Mayor Richard Onderko said critical recovery and mitigation projects, including efforts to move emergency services to higher ground, have yet to move forward. While some families and businesses have recovered, many residents say they still face uncertainty about what another major flood could mean for their homes and future. The anniversary event honored those who persevered through one of New Jersey’s worst natural disasters while renewing calls for additional state and federal support to help Manville prepare for the next storm.
