The plan involves floodgates and elevating thousands of homes
A $16 billion plan to ease back bay flooding at the Jersey Shore is under question. The Army Corps of Engineers says the project would address one of the major sources of storm damage at the Shore. It is considered to be one of the most ambitious and expensive flood control efforts of any state in the U.S. But some say it lacks details on the environmental impact and exactly where that diverted stormwater would go — and it’s expensive.
“The flood control projects we’ve done well before Sandy have always been expensive. The question is what investment is worthwhile?” said Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette.
